Scrumptious quilted velvets, silks, chenille tweeds and gross grain ribbons were the necessary elements for this Chanel Couture inspired bedroom for my favorite 13 year old, Taylor. It was time to “grow up” her bedroom from the bright and vibrant pink and green polka dots and swirls on her walls and bedding.
I made an idea board with the pictures below and several fabric samples to get us started. Taylor circled the style elements she liked and and the colors she wanted in the room and then we talked about what her needs and wishes were. She does her homework on the bed and never used her desk…so that had to go. Taylor loved the chic headboard idea, so we so we removed the large head and footboard from the bed and that made a big difference in space. I suggested a cozy little chair and ottoman or settee in the room for her to surf the web, do her homework, or let her friends flop onto when they were over to visit. Taylor wanted a big bulletin board and I suggested chandeliers for the room.
Then we talked about Miss Coco Chanel and the impact she made on fashion…her style was timeless, classic and never trendy. Taylor is no stranger to designer names and has a great sense of her own style. So, her room would start with the basics of good design and then we will accessorize.

Taylor must have a pink palette in her room!
The first thing I constructed was her new headboard. I searched for a while to find the perfect quilted velvet in a deep chocolate.
I found the hot pink velvet Euro shams and quilted coverlet at Neiman Marcus. Then I researched the manufacturer’s name and found their web site. How’s this for a big pay off…the manufacturer sold us the coverlet and shams at half the price of NM! I made the pillows with extra scraps of fabrics from the headboard and settee.
Do you remember this lamp? (here) The base and shade are from Target and I embellished with gross grain ribbon and Austrian crystals. Looks better than the ones above from Pottery Barn Teen. Big chunky frames in hot pink, turquoise and chocolate are scattered throughout the room. Eventually, there will be artwork behind the lamps and over the headboard.
Taylor can stash her rings, retainer, or whatever needs safe keeping in this little urn.
Quite possibly, this pink chenille leopard settee is the pearl of the room! I found the piece in a resale shop and had it reupholstered in this yummy fabric! I painted the legs a metallic silver to complement the bedside lamps, mirrored glass Parson’s table, the chandelier that hangs over the settee, and the bulletin board in the room. I made the brown pillow with scraps and the blue silk rosette pillow at Target.
The chandelier hangs over the settee and I added a turquoise gross grain ribbon to the chain…just like a Chanel bag!
Both bulletin boards are made of spray painted old mirror frames. I added a layer of foam and batting to give it a thick, padded look.

The windows have blinds, so we opted for a simple window topper with crushed velvet, silk and the pink leopard.
And what couturiere’s salon wouldn’t be complete without dress forms? These hold Taylor’s jewelry.
There are still a few touches left to add to the room, but for the mean time, she is as cozy as can be!
